On Tuesday, March 1, all day, at all Kansas City area Chipotles – when you order (dine in or carry out) and present the approved Chipotle/Humane Society flyer — 50% of your purchase (up to $5,000) will be donated to the shelter pets at the Humane Society of Greater Kansas City’s no-kill shelter. Targeted Spay Neuter Sees Results

In early 2010 PetSmart Charities granted a $25,000 gift to the Humane Society of Greater Kansas City for a targeted spay/neuter program. The program provides $5 surgeries for cats and $20 surgeries for dogs for residents in the 66101, 66102 and 66105 zip codes. These zip codes had the highest number of animal complaint calls from the local Animal Control facility.

After just 6 months, Animal Control noticed a 50% drop in the number of complaint calls in one of the targeted zip codes.

We believe the increased communication between the residents about these low-cost resources has not only helped to decrease the number of unwanted litters being born, it’s started to build trust between the residents, Animal Control and The Humane Society of Greater Kansas City.

The city has a spay/neuter ordinance, but without these types of low-cost resources available, a spay/neuter ordinance is doomed to fail.

Romeo & Juliet’s Happy Ending

Sometimes the stories that come out of the Humane Society’s Ray of Hope program can be difficult to hear. Luckily, Romeo and Juliet’s Ray of Hope story has a happy ending. These two sweet dogs (pictured) were abandoned inside a house after their owners moved away. When the starving dogs were found a month later they were barely able to stand, but their tails were still wagging. The doors and windows of the house were scratched where the dogs had tried to escape. They’d gone through the trash looking for food and the toilet water was all gone. Romeo and Juliet were saved just in time. Visit their adoption profiles online at hsgkc.org to learn more about these two sweet dogs.

Ray of Hope is a partnership between the Humane Society and KCK Animal Control Services. This innovative partnership has dramatically decreased the euthanasia at the KCK Animal Control Facility from 70% in 2007 to less than 1% in 2010. (All the while, the Humane Society has continued to maintain our no kill shelter status too.) Nash Gets His Second Chance

Nash now lives the high life in Phoenix, AZ.

Nash is just one of the thousands of homeless pets that will be saved through the Ray of Hope program in 2010. Karen Sands, the Humane Society shelter director, and Captain Rodney Smith, the KCK Animal Control Director, were riding in Captain Smith’s police car on their way to answer an animal outreach call when they noticed Nash running along the road. Captain Smith slowed his police cruiser and told Karen to open the passenger car door. “Lets see if he’ll just jump into the car,” Captain Smith said.

Nash knew he’d found a good deal and he jumped right into the car, onto her lap and into her heart.

Nash had been living a tough life on the streets. He had such a severe case of mange that most of his hair had fallen out. The Humane Society vet staff provided the much needed medical care to start Nash’s healing. Eventually, two Humane Society volunteers volunteered their time to drive Nash to a rescue group that had space for this sweet boy. The volunteers took a day of vacation from their jobs and drove 20 hours in one roundtrip to deliver Nash to his foster family.

As you can see from his photo, Nash looks great now. His life of the streets is behind him. His mange has been treated and he’s living the high life in Phoenix, Arizona. We wish you the best Nash — have a great life, one you definitely deserve.
